The Gilday Legacy
Introduction
The Gilday's were an Irish family who moved between Ireland and Scotland in the mid-1800s following job opportunities in the textile trade. Their eventual emigration to the United States was precipitated by our Civil War; with the blockade of cotton from the South, the jobs disappeared.
As was a common practice, John came first securing employment in the mines of Pennsylvania. A year later, Bridget and their children followed. They joined the westward migration of people staying for a brief spell in Indiana and then settling in Scranton, Kansas in the late 1870s.
